Looking for a clear, concise guide on the Motability Car Scheme? Here is everything you need to know about this scheme that’s designed to help disabled people and war pensioners lease a car specifically designed to help make everyday life easier.
In the nearly 40 years that Motability has been around, over 4 million people have been able to utilise this scheme to lease a new vehicle.
HOW DOES THE MOTABILITY CAR SCHEME WORK?
This is a scheme that’s aimed to benefit people who receive a higher rate mobility allowance or War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement, allowing them to exchange it to lease a car, scooter or powered wheelchair.
As part of this lease, all the costs of insurance, maintenance and breakdown cover are included making it as affordable and hassle free as possible. When you take out a car using the Motability Car Scheme, all you will need to pay for is the fuel.
WHAT VEHICLE CAN I HAVE WITH MOTABILITY?
Currently, there are 2,715 different vehicles that can be leased through this scheme. This is an absolutely massive selection of cars to choose from, ranging from small two-seater city cars all the way through to large, 4WD options. You can use the Motability website to find all the available cars and narrow down your search using the options found on site.
Already have a car in mind? Simply select the make and model you want and it will bring up the options available to you. There is also the option to have special adaptations made to the vehicle in order to make it suitable for you to drive, store a wheelchair or simply enter/ exit the car.
WHO CAN DRIVE?
It isn’t just the individual applying for the scheme that will be able to drive this vehicle, you can also add any carers, family or even friends as named drivers. This means that the vehicle can even be set up so that the individual in question is typically the passenger, rather than driver, with adaptations made to the vehicle to improve accessibility in key areas.
WHICH CAR DEALERS CAN I USE?
You can use any dealership who have signed up to Motability in order to acquire this vehicle. Pick a dealership close to you and book an appointment with their Motability specialist at a time that best suits you. They will be able to give you all the information about the car that you need in order to make an informed decision about whether that’s the right car for you. Don’t forget to ask for a test drive to make sure that you’re comfortable behind the wheel.
HOW TO ORDER
Simply inform the dealership that you’d like to lease that specific vehicle and their Motability specialist will place the order for you. In order to complete this process, you will need:
- Your driving licence
- Certificate of entitlement from DWP or SPVA
- Proof of address
- Other named drivers’ driving licences and consent for their details to be checked
- Details of any previous accidents or driving convictions
- Sign the Statement of Responsibilities
Certain vehicles in the Motability Car Scheme may require an advanced payment, which will need to be paid before or on the day of collection of your new car. Certain dealerships may ask for a deposit upon ordering a new car, which will be deducted from the advance payment.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET MY CAR?
As this is a new car, delivery times will vary from manufacturer and model – the dealership will be able to tell you at the time you order. Most delivery times will take a couple of weeks, although this could be as long as 3-6 months depending on vehicle specification and lead time. Don’t worry about price change if you have a long wait for delivery, the price confirmed with the dealer is the price that you will pay.
WHAT’S THE LENGTH OF A MOTABILITY LEASE?
The typical length of a Motability lease is 3 years – with all insurance, breakdown cover and maintenance covered. Once this lease term is finished, simply return the vehicle to the dealership and exchange it for a new lease and continue this cycle.
