First things first, DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE WHILST DRIVING. Not only is it illegal and will land you with points on your licence and a fine, it is also incredibly dangerous.
With that out of the way, here are some apps that you can use on your phone to make driving a much more enjoyable experience:
#1 Google Maps
You probably already have this handy app on your phone anyway, but did you know that it can provide you with turn by turn navigation? What’s more, it can help you to avoid traffic by rerouting based off information provided by other users and sources. You can take a look at your current route and see which areas are likely to see you stuck in traffic – you could then choose to take an alternative route or just stick it out. Most of the time, Google will provide you with at least three routes to get to your destination.
Another navigation app, yes, but Waze is the world’s largest community-based traffic and navigation app. What does this mean for you? Quite simply, it gives you the most accurate and up to date road conditions available, ensuring that you don’t spend your days stuck in traffic. Other features include being able to report accidents or hazards on the road and even find the cheapest fuel prices near you. The maps are constantly updated, so unlike satellite navigation devices you won’t find yourself having to pay to keep your directions up to date.
If you spend long hours on the road, then chances are that you’re going to become bored of the monotony of the radio. The good news is that you don’t have to sit there and suffer! Spotify allows you to send your favourite songs straight to your car’s speakers, letting you play what you want, when you want. The free app allows you to listen to anything, provided you have an internet connection, while the subscribing version gives you ‘offline’ options which can drastically reduce your data use.
Price: Free/ £9.99per month
Wish you could check your text messages and emails while driving, but don’t want to look at your phone? DriveSafe.ly is a handy driving app that reads your messages to you without needing to take your eyes off the road. You can add on the caller ID reader which will tell you who’s calling by name, letting you screen your talk. Really need to reply to that message? Respond by voice (PRO) lets you do just that, completely hands-free!
Price: Free/ £6.38 for pro version
#5 Aviva Drive
A new app from insurance provider Aviva, is actually a hidden gem. It lets you see how good of a driver you are compared to the national average – subconsciously making you strive to be the best driver you can be. Good drivers receive rewards, such as discounts on their insurance premium – don’t worry if you’re a bad driver though as low scores won’t increase your cost.
#6 Car Dashdroid
Only available for Android currently, and with a name like that we doubt it’ll release on iPhone anytime soon, Car Dashdroid provides an easy to use home dock that works seamlessly with your car’s Bluetooth. It features large, one-touch buttons and full voice commands which means that you never need to take your eyes off the road. This is the perfect platform to work with Google Maps and Spotify to create the most relaxed driving experience.
#7 Car Launcher Pro
Looking for something a bit more visually appealing and with more features than Car Dashdroid – or something that’s available on iTunes? Car Launcher Pro provides you with just that, giving you route information, current speed, alerts you when you hit your set maximum speed, shows music, contacts and much, much more. It also includes full voice integration, including reading messages and allowing you to respond by voice. Obviously all these extra features don’t come for free, but you can’t complain considering it’s under £3!
Sick of the put-put-put noise your micra makes? This app gives you the big engine raw that you’ve always wanted without costing you a penny. Choose from a range of cars, pick your favourite and listen as your car (or rather, your phone) screams to life as you put pedal to the metal!
