The summer is coming and most people have already planned their holidays, but if you haven’t then don’t worry it isn’t too late! Luckily, we’re not too far away from the continent, so if you want a super awesome holiday without spending an absolute fortune then why not look at a European road trip?

Here are some absolutely fantastic destinations with roads and attractions to please.

SchwarzwaldhochstrasseRoute 500 – Germany

If you haven’t heard of Route 500 then you don’t know what you’re missing out on. This road cuts straight through the beautiful Black Forest, giving you incredible views of some amazing, rugged scenery through the mountains.

There are plenty of viewpoints and delvederes dotted around this route, with plenty of short hikes found through these foothills and camping spots available if that’s your type of thing. Don’t worry if you don’t like camping, you’ll find plenty of hotels and boutique bed and breakfasts in this region.

Old Military Road – A93 – Scottish Highlands

You don’t have to leave the UK for an awesome road trip – in the summer months Scotland can be just as good as the Alps! It may not exactly have the same feel, but there’s a wealth of history and tradition to be found here and the Old Military Road lets you sail through Cairngorms National Park from the comfort of your car.

It’s not the easiest of drives, but the scenery is flawless and there are plenty of villages, campsites and countryside to explore. If you want to escape into nothingness and get away from it all then the Old Military Road is definitely worth a visit.

Routes des Grandes Alpes – France

Hankering for the real Alps? No road is better than the Routes des Grandes Alpes for exploring the cultural and natural heritage of the area. Thanks to modern motorways, this route is relatively empty which makes it ideal for road trips where you simply want to take in the scenery. There are plenty of fantastic places to stop off and explore, with lots of little mountain towns and Alpine resorts to enjoy.

Done properly, this road trip will take you a couple of days and leave you with some absolutely phenomenal memories and miles and miles of smiles.

Amalfi Coast – Italy

This holiday hotspot is one of the best driving destinations in all of Europe, taking you on a journey through time as you wind your way down the Italian coast. All the classic architecture of this area is on full display, changing and progressing as you make your way along this road.

If you love driving, fine wine and exquisite food combined with lovely temperatures, golden sunshine and a cooling sea breeze then you need to put the Amalfi Coast on your checklist.

Transfagarasan – Romania

This mountain highway was named as the World’s Best Road by Jeremy Clarkson and features 90km of twists, turns, drops and climbs. It isn’t for the faint of heart and you definitely need to be a driving enthusiast to enjoy this road trip.

The area itself is a brilliant location for a summer holiday, with plenty of warming sunshine lots of culture to take in and a natural and relaxing atmosphere. It can get quite busy in peak summer months, so it may be worth leaving this trip till September or October for the best experience.
