Today, getting an electric or hybrid car can make the buyer eligible for a substantial grant, but the grant period is coming to a close. The plug-in hybrid grant gives buyers money towards the purchase price of hybrid and electric cars. The grant deadline will occur when the limit has been reached or by 9 November 2018 at the latest.
The grant is to encourage buyers to purchase these environmentally friendly cars. The money received is to off-set the price difference between electric cars and petrol or diesel cars. The grant can only be used towards the purchase of a new car.
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is the most popular plug-in hybrid in the UK. Many buyers have enjoyed the hybrid car grant since the UK government started this initiative. Buyers receive £2,500 towards the purchase price of plug-in hybrids.
Purchasing a fully electric car gave buyers a grant of £4,500 off the purchase price. Buyers of electric cars can still receive £3,500 towards the purchase price after the hybrid grant ends. So, even though the grant will still be available, it pays to hurry grab the higher grant amount before the plug-in car grant ends.
Buyers who place an order for a car before the grant ends will receive the grant as long as the car is delivered within 9 months of the purchase date. The transition period for the end of the plug-in car grant is 11 October to 9 November. If the designated car limit is met before 9 November, the grant will end the next business day.
It is expected that many buyers will accelerate their plans to purchase new vehicles now to take advantage of the grant before it closes. Therefore, car buyers who want to get the grant are encouraged not to wait and warned not to assume that the grant will be available until the November deadline. There is no guarantee that the grant will be available until 9 November.
