Why are electric cars better than fuel cars?

As more people make the decision to buy an electric vehicle (EV) instead of a petrol or diesel car, the sales of EVs are up year on year.

In fact, a recent ONS survey found that over half of younger drivers are likely to switch to an electric car in the next 10 years.

There are plenty of great reasons to join these new electric-car buyers. One of the most important being that the ban on the sale of petrol and diesel cars comes into force in 2030.

But there might be a few people out there who are still on the fence when it comes to electric cars. So, we asked the EV experts at Nathaniel Cars to give us their reasons why electric cars are better than cars that run on fossil fuel.

Electric cars are better for the environment

In a previous blog, we explored why electric cars are better for the environment. But don’t take our word for it. On the Greenpeace website, they share the two main reasons why electric cars are greener than petrol cars.

1. Electricity is getting cleaner all the time

Petrol and diesel cars will always release harmful C02 emissions. Whereas, electric cars can run on renewable energy, and increasingly do.

In the UK, the carbon footprint of electricity is falling fast, and every year this trend continues. In May 2019, the UK had its first coal-free fortnight and, as the electricity grid gets cleaner, the carbon impact of manufacturing new cars will continue to fall.

2. Electric motors are much more efficient than conventional engines

Even the most efficient petrol engine will only use around 12% to 30% of the fuel’s energy to make the wheels or other functions work.

On the other hand, electric motors are around 77% efficient. Which means they get more than twice as many miles out of the same amount of energy.

Electric cars can save you money

Owning an electric car is likely to cost you a lot less than a petrol or diesel car. Over the vehicle’s life, there are several reasons for this, including:

  • the cost per mile driven in an EV being significantly less than a petrol or diesel car
  • pure electric cars being exempt from vehicle excise duty
  • maintenance costs being as much as 50% less because EVs have fewer parts

You can work out the fuel savings based on your own usage in our handy fuel-cost comparison calculator at the bottom of this blog.

Electric cars really are better than petrol and diesel cars

Now that we’ve shown the reasons why electric cars are better than fuel cars, you’re probably asking yourself, what are the best electric cars to buy?
